EA Webinar | EfW start-up and shut-down definitions for incinerator and co-incinerator operators

This EA webinar / Teams Meeting is for all operators of waste incinerators and co-incinerators, and will cover the Environment Agency’s (EA’s) approach to auditing start-up and shut-down definitions (an EA regulatory priority for 2025-26).

Operators in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are also welcome to attend (as the other UK regulators will be taking a similar approach).

The webinar will be recorded, with a link to the recording circulated afterwards for any operators who were unable to attend (and for future reference).

The webinar will cover the following:

1. Basic principles of defining start-up & shut-down examples as set out in Environment Agency guidance on deriving start-up and shut-down definitions for waste incinerators and co-incinerators (circulated to operators on 11/12/24 and attached to this invite).
2. The current versions of the OTNOC Management Plan template and start-up & shut-down definitions audit template (circulated to operators on 21/08/25 and attached to this invite).
3. Tips for ensuring a successful audit
4. A high-level run through of some case study examples of agreed start-up & shut-down definitions for:
   1. Municipal EfW plants
   2. A waste wood co-incinerator
   3. A clinical waste incinerator
5. Question & answer session
