The Environment Agency is reminding all businesses involved in the waste industry that they must be registered as a waste carrier, broker, or dealer. This includes anyone who transports, buys, sells, or arranges for the disposal of waste.
In England, registration is simple and can be completed directly online via the GOV.UK website.
Using a third-party to complete your application, or using third party contact information may cause you to miss important updates, including notifications about your registration status.
Who Needs to Register?
If your business operations include any of the following, you must register with the Environment Agency:
- Carrier: You transport waste as part of your business.
- Dealer: You buy, sell, or dispose of waste.
- Broker: You arrange for someone else to buy, sell, or dispose of waste.
The Online Registration Process
The Environment Agency is urging businesses to use the official GOV.UK link for registration to avoid extra fees from third-party websites.
Register or renew as a waste carrier, broker or dealer – GOV.UK
The cost for registration is £184 and the renewal fee is £125. However, if you only transport waste you produce yourself (excluding construction and demolition waste), the registration is free.
It is crucial to provide correct and complete information during registration. Incorrect details, whether by mistake or on purpose, can lead to your removal from the register.
The EA are reminding companies that using third-party contact information may cause you to miss important updates, including notifications about your registration status.
Stay Compliant and Combat Waste Crime
Operating as an unregistered waste carrier, broker, or dealer is a serious offense that can result in enforcement action.
By completing your registration yourself and ensuring all your details are up-to-date, you can remain compliant and help protect the waste industry from illegal activities.
If you have an existing registration and your details change, you must inform the Environment Agency within 28 days. You can do this by emailing nccc-carrierbroker@environment-agency.gov.uk or calling 03708 506 506 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm).
To report illegal waste activities, contact the 24-hour incident hotline at 0800 80 70 60 or anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
