Waste management is changing in the UK - for the better.
Recycling and recovery targets set in the UK and in Europe means better use is made of the resources we use. High environmental standards for waste management facilities will ensure greater protection of human health and the environment.
And it's important that we change. We are producing more waste - municipal waste is increasing every year, though ESA Members are working to recover more of the materials and energy contained in this waste.
Currently about 43% of all UK waste and approximately 64% of the UK’s municipal waste is sent to landfill. Landfills play an essential role in the safe disposal of certain wastes, but most wastes could instead be recycled, composted or used to generate energy. ESA’s Members - the UK waste management industry - are doing this by providing integrated waste management services combining:
Composting - creating a useful product from biodegradable waste
Recycling - producing materials which can be used in new products
Landfill - disposing of the residual waste safely
Energy from Waste - recovering materials, electricity and heat from waste
